Help make up Planned Parenthood's lost funds:

Since news of the Susan G Komen Foundation for the Cure’s decision to stop funding breast cancer screenings through Planned Parenthood, individual donors have contributed over $400,000 to PP to make up for lost funds. Last year SGK gave Planned Parenthood a $580,000 grant. How wonderful would it be if Planned Parenthood received more in donations to fund their vital programs in response to this anti-choice anti-woman decision than they ever got from SGK?

A brilliant article, but so difficult to read due to it’s, painful, painful truth. In many ways, I feel like it is speaking directly to me. I am the white, middle-class daughter of leftist, hippy, second-wave feminist parents (from San Fransisco, no less)- do I consider myself anti-racist? of course. Do I do much to try to end racism? not really.

Here at this liberal institute of higher learning, one of the richest in the world, it’s easy to forget about race- despite being surrounded by one of the poorest Black communities in the North East. Here where you can days on campus without seeing more than a handful of non-White or Asian faces, this stuff just slips our mind. Of course, the very fact that only 6% percent of the students here are Black should clue us in to the fact of racism in our lives but, as the article describes, White progressives go out of their way to ignore issues of race.

What hits hardest is his description of the women’s movement, which has been such an important part of my adult life. I’d like to think that feminism has come a long way since the 2nd wave, but it’s easy to see where it hasn’t. The author’s description of how NARAL refused to take a stand on the issue of bribing poor Black women to go on Norplant illustrates the issue all too well. While I campaign for freedom of reproductive choice, I have encountered many supposedly “pro-choice” activists who wouldn’t shy away from saying that some people just shouldn’t have children, no matter what their desire may be. I’m sure you’ve heard it as well. These kinds of statements are inherently classist, and usually racist, and it hurts the pro-choice movement’s credibility when we are not truly in favor of “choice” in all circumstances. You know all those anti-choice activists who are constantly calling the abortion rights movement racist that we’re always guffawing at? I hope they’re not right.

Good news! But don’t think that this will end here… The war of reproductive freedom is still being fought all over the country, and some anti-choice members of congress are preparing to press the issue further.

Personally, I will never forgive the House leadership for even considering such cuts.
